Is malt vinegar gluten-free?
Malt vinegar is not gluten-free. It's brewed from barley malt and retains detectable gluten, which is why Celiac Disease Foundation and Beyond Celiac both list it as unsafe. Distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, and rice vinegar are all safe gluten-free substitutes.
When it's safe
- You're using distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, or balsamic vinegar
- The label explicitly says "gluten-free malt vinegar" (extremely rare but exists)
When to avoid it
- The label says "malt vinegar" with no gluten-free claim — assume not safe
- You're at a fish-and-chips shop — UK-style malt vinegar is standard and contains gluten
- The sauce or condiment lists malt vinegar in the ingredients (check HP Sauce, many BBQ sauces)

Why isn't malt vinegar gluten-free when distilled vinegar is?
Distilled vinegars go through a process that removes detectable gluten. Malt vinegar is not distilled — it's fermented directly from malted barley, leaving measurable gluten behind.
Is balsamic vinegar gluten-free?
Yes. Balsamic vinegar is made from grapes and is naturally gluten-free. Verify specialty balsamic blends, but standard balsamic is safe.
