Is beer gluten-free?
Most beer is brewed from barley malt and contains gluten — unsafe for celiacs. Gluten-free beers made from sorghum, rice, millet, or buckwheat (brands like Ghostfish, Holidaily, Glutenberg, and Bard's) are safe. "Gluten-reduced" beers are controversial and not recommended for strict celiacs.
When it's safe
- The label says "gluten-free" and lists sorghum, rice, millet, or buckwheat
- The brewery is dedicated gluten-free (Ghostfish, Holidaily, Glutenberg, Bard's, Buck Wild)
- You're drinking hard cider, wine, or spirits from gluten-free grains
When to avoid it
- The label says "gluten-reduced" or "crafted to remove gluten" (Omission, Stone Delicious, Daura) — enzymes break gluten but it can still trigger celiac reactions
- Any standard barley or wheat beer

Are gluten-reduced beers safe for celiacs?
The Celiac Disease Foundation and most GI doctors say no. The enzyme process fragments gluten but doesn't remove it; standard tests can't measure the fragments reliably, and some celiacs still react.
Is whiskey gluten-free?
Distilled spirits, including whiskey made from barley or wheat, are gluten-free because distillation removes gluten. The FDA, Celiac Disease Foundation, and Beyond Celiac all consider them safe.
Is hard cider gluten-free?
Yes, almost always. Hard cider is made from apples. Watch for specialty ciders with added barley malt (rare) or shared bottling lines.
