GF Scanner is free to download from the App Store and Google Play, and your first scan, label or barcode, is free. After that, scanning needs a Pro subscription, which also adds AI ingredient analysis. The in-app gluten guide stays free, and on iPhone a Pro subscription can be shared with your family through Family Sharing.
The camera captures labels locally, but AI ingredient analysis and barcode lookup need an internet connection. Save scan results to your history to reference past products without a signal.
Partly, and it helps to know the limits. The app is available in 33 languages. The on-device label check reads Latin-script labels and recognizes gluten terms in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch, plus your phone's language. Pro AI analysis can read ingredient lists in many more languages and scripts, and barcode lookups use Open Food Facts, which lists products from many countries.
Use it as a second check, not a guarantee. The scanner flags gluten-containing grains (wheat, barley, rye, malt), common hidden sources and "may contain" warnings, but it can't measure gluten levels or spot cross-contact a label doesn't mention, and product data can be out of date. Always confirm on the package, and contact the manufacturer when in doubt.
