Is vanilla extract gluten-free?
Vanilla extract is gluten-free. It's made from vanilla beans steeped in distilled alcohol, and distillation removes any gluten from the alcohol source — even grain-based alcohols are safe. Both pure vanilla extract and imitation vanilla (synthetic vanillin) are considered gluten-free by the FDA and major celiac organizations.
When it's safe
- The label says "pure vanilla extract" or "imitation vanilla"
- The ingredients are vanilla, alcohol, and water (or vanillin and water)
When to avoid it
- The product is a "vanilla flavoring" that also contains malt or caramel coloring with no GF claim (rare)
- You're using a flavored extract blend (vanilla + hazelnut etc.) without a gluten-free label

Is vanilla extract with alcohol gluten-free?
Yes. Even if the alcohol is distilled from wheat or barley, the distillation process removes gluten below detection limits. The FDA and Celiac Disease Foundation both consider it safe.
Is imitation vanilla gluten-free?
Yes. Imitation vanilla uses synthetic vanillin (usually from wood lignin or petroleum), water, and sometimes caramel color — all gluten-free.
