Is dextrin gluten-free?
Dextrin is usually gluten-free. It's most often made from corn, tapioca, or potato, and while wheat-derived dextrin does exist, US FALCPA rules require "wheat" to appear in the ingredients or allergen statement. Outside the US, look for a gluten-free certification to be sure.
When it's safe
- The product is US-made and the allergen line does not mention wheat
- The ingredient is listed as "tapioca dextrin" or "corn dextrin"
- The product carries a gluten-free seal (GFCO, NCA)
When to avoid it
- The label says "wheat dextrin" without a gluten-free claim
- The product is from outside the US/EU with no gluten-free claim on the package

Is dextrin the same as maltodextrin?
No. Dextrin and maltodextrin are both starch-breakdown products, but they differ in processing and chain length. Both are usually gluten-free, and both require wheat disclosure in the US.
Is wheat dextrin gluten-free?
It can be — Benefiber (wheat dextrin) is tested to under 20 ppm and labeled gluten-free. But don't assume: without a gluten-free label, treat wheat dextrin as unsafe for celiacs.
